The position

Cafe Disability Support Worker at the Kensington Café and Mobile Coffee Van you’ll provide high standards of support to our clients.  Help people with disability build hospitality skills, confidence and independence through the Where Is My Coffee? Job Skills Program. You will coach and mentor participants during real customer service at our Kensington café and mobile coffee van, while delivering great coffee and a welcoming experience.

This casual role combines hands on disability support and hospitality. You will work at the Kensington café and travel with the coffee van to scheduled visits and events. Some van shifts are worked independently as the sole VMCH staff member. Shifts may include weekdays and occasional weekends.

• Work directly with participants to teach and practise barista, food preparation, customer service and safe workplace skills.
• Adapt your coaching to each person, give useful feedback and record their progress against individual goals.
• Make coffee, serve food and create a friendly experience for customers at the café and on the van.
• Drive, set up, stock, run and close the van on rostered shifts, sometimes independently, while maintaining safe participant support when a participant attends.
• Complete program records and follow food safety, vehicle and workplace safety procedures.

What’s required

• Solid barista and hospitality experience, including confident use of coffee machines and grinders.
• Experience supporting or mentoring people with disability, with patience, respect and an ability to explain tasks clearly.
• A valid Victorian driver’s licence and confidence driving a coffee van or designated vehicle.
• Current First Aid and Food Safety Handling certificates, a NDIS Worker Screening Check and a Victorian Working with Children Check.
• Initiative and sound judgement to work with a team or independently on the van, plus occasional weekend availability.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to converse and relate to people with understanding, patience and sensitivity
• Strong commitment to service and care
• Team focused and supportive of colleagues
• Certificate IV in Disability desirable
